The restauration of the Kasbah Mosque-La renovation de la mosquée de la Casbah

 The mosque in the Kasbah of Tangier is being renovated. It was established in the mid 18th century and renovated once in 1860. It was indeed in need of a face lift but is in fact being entirely refurbished inside and out.

La mosquée de la Casbah de Tanger est en cours de renovation. Elle fût établit dans la première moitié du 17è siècle et ensuite rénovée une première fois en 1860. Elle avait vraiment besoin d'une remise en état.

Magnificent ceilings have been restored outside...

Des plafonds peints magnifiques ont été restaurés à l'extérieur...

 ...and inside. 

...tout comme à l'intérieur.

The pillars and all the woodwork have been done anew. The brass chandeliers have been repaired and shined up. I took the pictures of the inside of the mosque while it was still possible as after the official opening I, as a non-believer, will not be able to enter.

Les piliers et les boiseries ont été entièrement refaites et les chandeliers en laiton ont été réparés et polis. J'ai pris ces photos pendant qu'il était encore temps car n'étant pas musulmane je ne pourrais pas entrer après l'inauguration.

Here are before and after photos of the minaret. The intricate brick and tile work has been replaced and the minaret returned to its original splendour.

Voici le minaret avant et après la rénovation. Le travail de brique et de jellij a été remplacé afin de rendre au minaret sa beauté originale.

What a joy to see this architectural marvel as it was once.

Quelle joie de voir cette splendeur architecturale retrouver sa grâce d'antan.

The Dignified Old Men of Tangier-Les Vieux Messieurs Dignes de Tanger

Winter can be rather cold in Tangier. They call the Tangier area, the Brittany of Morocco. It is a time when men trade their warm-weather clothes for the traditional wool djellaba, an elegant long overcoat with a pointed hood. 

Il peut faire froid l'hiver à Tanger. On n'appelle pas cette région la Bretagne du Maroc pour rien. Les hommes troquent leurs vêtements plus légers pour la traditionnelle djellaba en laine à capuche pointue.

This garment gives men a dignified elegance that no "western" coat ever could. They stand very erect and walk in long slow steps.

Cela donne aux vieux messieurs dignes une élégance incomparable. Ils se tiennent très droits et marchent à pas lents.

The streets of the medina of Tangier-Les ruelles de la médina de Tanger

The "streets" of the medina of Tangier are so small that no car can make it through. You only see motorbikes, wheelbarrows and man-drawn carts and often men just carry heavy loads on their backs from one point to another.

Les rues de la médina sont si étroites qu'aucune auto ne passe. On y voit des motos, des brouettes et des hommes qui tirent des carrioles ou qui portent de lourdes charges à même leur dos. 

Because houses are often small, people tend to add outwards above the street at the first floor as seen on the right here. 

Comme les maisons sont souvent petites, elles sont agrandies au dessus de la rue à partir du premier étage comme ici sur la droite.

 The advantage is that the streets are in the shade most of the day and stay cool in the summer.

Ceci a pour avantage que les rues sont à l'ombre une grande partie de la journée et restent fraiches en été.

On the other hand, above the first floor, one is only a few feet from the neighbour's windows.

Par contre, à partir du premier étage, les fenêtres sont à moins d'un mètre de celles du voisin.

This proximity made it possible for Jason Bourne, the character in the movie The Bourne Ultimatum, to make the breathtaking jump from inside one house into the window of the house across the way while fleeing the bad guys. The movie was shot in part in Tangier.

Cette proximité a permis à Jason Bourne, le personnage du Bourne Ultimatum poursuivi par les méchants, de faire un saut à couper le souffle d'une maison à l'autre. Le film a été tourné en partie à Tanger. 

This is the scene being filmed in the medina. The cameraman, attached to a tether, actually jumped after the stuntman. (you did not really think Matt Damon's insurance company would allow him to do his own stunts, did you?)

Ceci est une des scènes en cours de tournage dans la médina. Le cameraman, attaché à une corde, a sauté derrière le cascadeur. (vous ne pensiez pas vraiment que la compagnie d'assurance de Matt Damon lui aurait permis de faire ce saut lui-même?)
