Cats are everywhere in Tangier. You don't see many dogs as they are guard dogs and are usually tied down somewhere to keep burglars away. I was told that cats are fed on the streets and generally tolerated because they keep mice and rats away. Rarely are they kept as pets.
Il y a des chats partout à Tanger. On voit peu de chiens. Ceux-ci sont attachés près des maisons pour les garder. Les chats, par contre, se promènent dans les rues. On m'a dit que les chats sont tolérés et même nourris parce qu'ils se débarrassent des rats et des souris.
This one slithered behind the grid onto the window sill, a favourite spot for cats in Tangier.
Celui-ci s'est faufilé derrière la grille pour s'installer sur le rebord de la fenêtre, un des endroits préférés des chats de la ville.

These two were lounging at the café but they were soon shooed away.
Ces deux là avaient pris leurs aises au café du coin mais ont été immédiatement ejectés.
This shy green eyed beauty was ready to dart at the foundouk. While the cats are tolerated they are often rather harshly ousted if they linger.
Ce beau chaton timide est prêt à fuir. Bien que les chats soient tolérés, ils sont souvent brutalisés s'ils gênent.
